When the question arises—“Can Chinese Medicine treat asthma?” …“Can it treat high blood pressure?” …“psoriasis?” …or insert your favorite condition here?”—the most technically correct answer would almost always be: “No, that’s impossible!”
But Chinese Medicine can effectively treat a Taiyin pattern, restore Yang within Yin, or clear heat from the blood. Why this contrast between approaches offers so much room for discussion is exactly what we’re going to explore here.
Language and Thought Patterns of Two Different Cultures
Open a Western medical textbook, and you might find lines like this:
“Diffuse (non-suppurative) hepatitis caused by various viruses. There is no cross-immunity among the different types of hepatitis (A, B, C, D, E).”
A glance at the Chinese counterpart reveals descriptions such as:
“Lesser Yang disease is therefore the stage of progression from exterior to interior and the transformation from cold into heat. At this stage, the disease has left the greater Yang exterior, but has not yet entered the Yang brightness interior.”
